I'm pretty sure Janelle Monae is the coolest person in the world. I think NME's decision had something to do with the pervasive idea that "black people are naturally cool" and so some of her coolness got discounted because they're not paying attention to all the boundaries she's pushing. But really, SHE IS THE COOLEST PERSON IN THE WORLD. I love how she performs and only wears black and white. I don't know much about this Laura Marling chick, but she's not cool to look at, and she doesn't seem to have an overarching philosophy behind her music, and she's not a time traveler. So. Yeah.
