Janelle Monáe has announced the release of her eagerly awaited debut album. “The ArchAndroid” will arrive in stores and at all DSPs on May 18th.

The album will be heralded by the first single, “Tightrope (Feat. Big Boi).” The track will premiered today on Pitchfork.com, with a companion song from “The ArchAndroid,” entitled “Cold War,” debuting the following day right here on janellemonae.com. Both songs will be available for purchase exclusively at the site beginning February 12th, and then at all DSPs on February 23rd. In addition, a music video for “Tightrope” is currently in pre-production.

“The ArchAndroid” is an “EMOTION PICTURE” brought to you by Janelle Monáe and the Mad Minds of the Wondaland Arts Society. The star-studded featured cast includes the legendary Big Boi of OutKast, renowned poet Saul Williams, psychedelic dance-punk troupe Of Montreal, punk prophets Deep Cotton, and the Wondaland Arch Orchestra.

The album was recorded at Wondaland Studios in Atlanta, but written all over the world, including but not limited to Moscow, Prague, Istanbul, Berlin, Amsterdam, New York, and the Palace of the Dogs. “The ArchAndroid” was inspired not only by the energy of these places, but by such revolutionary musicians and artistic visionaries as Salvador Dalí, Walt Disney, OutKast, Stevie Wonder, Octavia Butler, David Bowie, Andy Warhol, and John Williams. The album was Executive Produced by Nate Wonder, Chuck Lightning, Janelle Monáe, and Sean “Diddy” Combs, with Co-Executive Production from Big Boi of OutKast.

Monáe is slated for a variety of live dates and TV appearances surrounding the release of “The ArchAndroid.” A charismatic and unique live performer who has previously toured with No Doubt, Paramore, Erykah Badu, and Raphael Saadiq, she will also be doing a series of exclusive residencies in a number of cities across North America (see attached itinerary below) – full details will be announced shortly.

What’s more, Monáe is set to join this summer’s much anticipated 2010 Lilith Tour, joining a star-studded array of female artists including Sarah MacLachlan, Norah Jones, Mary J. Blige, Loretta Lynn, Tegan & Sara, Sara Bareilles, Colbie Caillat, and many others. Full tour details will be unveiled shortly.

2009 “mtvU Woodie Awards” Premiere on MTV, MTV2, mtvU, and Palladia on Friday, December 4 at 10pm ET/PT

New York, NY – November 16, 2009 – mtvU, MTV’s 24-hour college network, today confirmed new additions to the performance and presenter roster for the sixth-annual “mtvU Woodie Awards” – the only awards honoring music voted best by college students, premiering on Friday, December 4 at 10pm ET on mtvU, MTV, MTV2 and Palladia.

Clipse will be joined by Rick Ross to perform “I’m Good (remix),” and Cam’ron will join forces with the hip-hop duo for a collaboration on “Popular Demand (Popeyes).” Additionally, Passion Pit will take a break from tour to deliver an electric performance of their single “The Reeling.” Previously announced performers include Death Cab For Cutie, Matt & Kim and The Dead Weather. Pete Wentz, Zooey Deschanel, 3OH!3, Amber Tamblyn, Asher Roth, Mary-Louise Parker, David Cross, Janelle Monáe, and Pac Div will also be on hand to present the night’s awards. In addition, DJ/producer Diplo of Major Lazer will spin the hottest beats to keep the party going all night. The “2009 mtvU Woodie Awards” will take place on November 18, 2009 at the Roseland Ballroom in New York City.

After over 3.1 million votes, the highest number of votes in Woodies history, KUPS from the University of Puget Sound captured the 2009 “Radio Woodie.” On Friday, November 13, legendary music personality Matt Pinfield of 101.9 WRXP New York surprised the Tacoma, WA station by announcing that the crew earned a highly coveted chunk of wood honoring their commitment to championing artists before they achieve mainstream success.

The “Woodie” awards are a show by college students, for college students. For the first-time ever, mtvU put the “Woodies” graphics in the hands of its audience. Students created original works of art that will be featured throughout the show, acting as a canvas to announce the nominees for each category. Student artists making their “Woodies” debut this year include Janice Chae of Maryland Institute College of Art (Designed the “Woodie” of the Year Graphic), Liz Moser of Pratt (Designed Best Music On Campus Graphic), Michael Kennedy of Pratt (Designed “Good Woodie” Graphic), Kyle Hebert of Massachusetts College of Art & Design (Designed “Radio Woodie” Graphic), Kathleen Madamba of Drexel University (Designed the “Performing Woodie” Graphic), Julie Friedenberg of Pratt Institute (Designed the “Left Field Woodie” Graphic), Lisa Champ of Pratt Institute (Designed the “Best Video Woodie” Graphic) and Tommaso Dell’Anna of Pratt Institute (Designed the “Breaking Woodie” Graphic).

This year’s performers will join an already incredible list of performers who have graced the Woodies stage in years past including Beck, Vampire Weekend, Santigold, Gym Class Heroes, Lykke Li, All Time Low and Imogen Heap. College students established the “mtvU Woodie Awards” in 2004, propelling some of their favorite acts to the next level of their careers – including surging record sales, headlining tours and accolades at other award shows such as the MTV Video Music Awards. Since the first “mtvU Woodie Awards,” artists such as Fall Out Boy (Streaming Woodie ’04), the Killers (Breaking Woodie ’04), Death Cab for Cutie (Best Video Woodie ’05), Plain White Ts (Breaking Woodie ’06), Gym Class Heroes (Woodie of the Year ’07) and Paramore (Woodie of the Year ‘08), have enjoyed mainstream success after winning big at the Woodies.

To vote for your favorite artists, log on to woodies.mtv.com now through November 16.

Official sponsors of the “2009 mtvU Woodies Awards” are American Family Insurance, Garnier Fructis, HP, Rhapsody, U.S. Airforce, and U.S. Army/ROTC.

The official Woodies post party is being sponsored by Crest Events at their Opera Ballroom and Eden Nightclub with DJ 88 Keys spinning beats throughout the night.

The “2009 mtvU Woodies” are Executive Produced by Ross Martin, Eric Conte and Amy Doyle. Tracy Hellerud is Supervising Producer. Joe Buoye is Executive-in-Charge of Production. Gina Esposito is Executive in Charge of Music and Talent. Wendy Plaut is Executive in Charge of Celebrity Talent.

On November 17, Studio 360 takes you where no audience has gone before: traveling through time. In this live show hosted by Kurt Andersen at WNYC’s The Greene Space (taped for later broadcast), scientists and artists explain why time travel is more than an idle fantasy.

Janelle Monae Astrophysicist David Goldberg (A User’s Guide to the Universe) runs down the physics of time travel, and explains what to do if you meet your own ancestors. Simon Wells, the great-grandson of H.G. explains his own obsession with the classic The Time Machine. Musical sensation Janelle Monae embodies Cindi Mayweather, an android with a heart of gold, on the run from authorities in the 28th century. Cindi has some serious warnings and she delivers them with serious funk. And we invite special guests from the future to join us, via time machine.

Studio 360’s “Science & Creativity” explores the intersection of art and science. The series is supported in part by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.
